FAQ: Is this tool safe to use? Is it 'cheating'? #33

Description

@Pronwan

The short answer:

No, it is not a cheat. Rust+ Desk is a third-party tool that operates entirely within the boundaries set by Facepunch. It does not interact with the game's memory, files, or the Rust.exe in any way.

EVERYTHING you can do with this app, can also be done without it. We just put it into one desktop UI.

The technical details:

1. Official API only: The app communicates exclusively with the official Rust+ Companion API provided by Facepunch and the BattleMetrics API for server-side/player information.
2. No "Memory Bullshit": We do not use DMA, RAM-reading, or DLL injection.
3. No File Altering: The tool never touches your local game files or modifies the game client.
4. Transparency: Being open-source, anyone can audit the code to verify that it doesn't perform any malicious or "shady" actions.

Personal Stake: 13,000+ Hours & Reputation

I am not (just) a dev; I am a die-hard Rust enthusiast. I have over 13,000 hours in the game and have been creating Rust content for years (check out my channel: youtube.com/pronwan).

I use this tool myself. Having invested a decade into my Steam account and my standing in the community, the last thing I would ever do is develop or use something that could lead to a VAC or game ban.

Community & Creator Support

I'm incredibly grateful for the positive reception from the community. A huge thank you to beancan for covering the tool in his recent video! Seeing seasoned Rust creators find value in this project is a massive motivator:

Facepunch’s Stance:

Facepunch generally doesn't give official approval to third-party projects to avoid liability. However, I have always played with open cards. I’ve been a part of this community for years and was even featured as a creator in Official Community Update 243.

I have consistently reached out to Facepunch developers (Errn, Alistair, etc.) via X and Discord to ensure they are aware of this project. While they don't provide formal "stamped" approvals, the feedback has been positive.

The "Nod from the Gods":

Following our v4.0.0 release, Alistair McFarlane (Lead Producer at Facepunch) liked our update announcement on X. While it's not an official approval, of course, we take this as a silent nod and a sign that we are on the right path:

We are committed to keeping this tool fair, helpful, and 100% compliant with the spirit of the game.
