[Question] Use integrations on a managed profile

Heya! Just digging into HealthLog, and it's simply said already quite amazing. However, a quick question: Is it possible to use integrations on managed profiles? Or would those profile need to be added as proper accounts in order to utilize that data?

For example with a withings scale that has profiles for every family member. These are accessible when connecting an account in the account integrations (Withings asks which person should be linked). How could one use the data that Withings already has for a family member, and add that to their respective managed accounts?

Hey, thanks so much, that's really nice to hear.

Short answer: not yet. Inside a managed profile, connected services like Withings only show their status for now. Connecting one runs through a sign-in with Withings in your own browser, and at the moment that flow can't safely tell which of your profiles the connection is meant for. We left it out rather than risk data ending up in the wrong record.

The good part is that most of the groundwork is already there. Every record can have its own Withings link, and incoming Withings data is matched to whichever record that Withings person is linked to. So a family member's Withings profile could feed straight into their managed profile. What's missing is a safe way for you as the guardian to set up that link, and I'd really like to add it.

Until then you can enter their readings by hand inside the managed profile, or give that person their own account and connect Withings there. Your other suggestion about turning a managed profile into a full account later (#959) is on the roadmap as well, so that route won't be a dead end.

One more thing I should have mentioned, because it works today without waiting for anything.

If you set the family member up as a proper account instead of a managed profile, you can still look after that record from your own login:

1. Create the account, sign in as that person once in a browser and connect Withings there. Withings asks which person to link, so you pick theirs.
2. While you're still signed in as them, open Settings → Shared access, invite your own account and choose "Can manage". The lighter "Can view and add" lets you add readings but not correct or remove anything.
3. Accept the invitation in your own account. After that you can switch into their record from the account menu and their Withings data keeps coming in on its own.

A couple of things still need that account's own login. Changing its settings, like modules, targets or notifications, is one. Reconnecting Withings if the link ever drops is the other. Reminders also go to that account's own notification channels and not to you, so if you want them on your phone, give the account an ntfy topic and subscribe to that topic on your phone.

And if they ever want to take the record over themselves, a new password and ending your access is all it takes.
