Subject: [PATCH 1/7] Make instant mean instant, and say what may be done with
this
Instant was six milliseconds a point, because a stroke delivered faster than
the receiving app samples arrives as a press and a release with nothing in
between. Measured against the 1,679-point castle on a Pixel 8 Pro: 0 ms drew
it in 2.4 seconds and lost two thirds of the points; 1 ms delivers all of
them in 5.0 seconds; 3 ms takes 11; 6 ms takes 19. So one millisecond it is -
forty-four times faster than the input command path, with nothing dropped.
The injector also learned to carry a stroke as history inside a single event,
the way a 240 Hz digitizer talks to an app drawing at 120. That is genuinely
instant where the receiver reads the history, and useless where it does not:
Samsung Internet dropped it either way, whole-stroke or in chunks of eight,
so it stays available and off by default rather than being the default that
quietly loses detail. The test canvas now reads coalesced events, without
which a working injector looks broken.
And the licence. This is source-available, not open source: personal use is
unrestricted, while commercial use, redistribution - free redistribution
included - and reskinning need written permission, with exceptions considered
on request. LICENSE carries the binding text, TERMS.md says the same thing in
plain English and Russian, the README leads with it, and AGENTS.md and
CLAUDE.md say it to the tools that read those, since an assistant confidently
describing this as MIT would do real damage.
Earlier releases went out under MIT. That grant stands for those versions and
does not extend past them; the licence says so itself.

+
+## What this project is
+
+Two pieces that ship together:
+
+- **`adbtouch`** — a Python library for synthetic touch input on Android over
+ ADB: tracing an image into strokes, drawing them, recording and replaying
+ gestures.
+- **`AutoDraw`** — a desktop app on top of it.
+
+## How it draws, which is the part that surprises people
+
+There are three paths into a device, picked automatically by
+`Device.draw_paths`:
+
+1. **`raw`** — `sendevent` into `/dev/input`. Fastest. Refused by any recent
+ Pixel: SELinux denies the shell domain write access whatever the file mode
+ says, and `sendevent` then fails per line while the script exits cleanly.
+ `Device.supports_raw_touch` probes for it.
+2. **`injector`** — a 3 KB jar (`injector/`, built by
+ `tools/build_injector.py` into `adbtouch/injector.jar`) run once through
+ `app_process` and fed points over stdin. This is the path that works
+ everywhere and the only one where the time between points is ours, which is
+ what makes both instant drawing and hand-like drawing possible.
+3. **`input`** — `input motionevent`, one process per point, about 110 ms each.
+ The last resort.
+
+Two things that are not obvious and are easy to break:
+
+- Events sharing a millisecond get coalesced, so the injector forces event time
+ forward for every event.
+- "Instant" is not zero delay. The receiving app samples input per frame, so a
+ stroke delivered in under a millisecond arrives as a press and a release with
+ nothing in between. Measured on a Pixel 8 Pro against a 1,679-point drawing:
+ 0 ms lost two thirds of the points; **1 ms delivered all of them in 5.0
+ seconds**; 6 ms took 19 seconds. 1 ms is the default for a reason.
+
+## Conventions
+
+- Tests are `unittest`, run with `python -m unittest discover -s tests`. Keep
+ them passing; there are around 150.
+- Comments explain *why*, not *what*. Several of them record a measurement or a
+ failure that cost real time to find - do not delete those.
+- Demo assets under `docs/` are generated by `tools/make_demo.py`, never edited
+ by hand.
+- `tools/test_canvas.py` puts a drawing canvas on a real device over
+ `adb reverse`. It is how the drawing paths get verified; use it rather than
+ guessing.

+Copyright (c) 2026 Maxim Averyanov. All rights reserved.
+
+READ THIS BEFORE USING, COPYING OR REDISTRIBUTING THIS SOFTWARE.
+
+This software is source-available, not open source. The source code is
+published so that it can be read, learned from and used privately. It is not
+placed in the public domain, and it does not carry an MIT, BSD, Apache or GPL
+grant. Anything the sections below do not permit requires written permission
+from the copyright holder.
+
+In this licence, "the Software" means this repository and everything in it
+except the third-party components listed in section 7. "You" means the person
+or organisation exercising the permissions below. "The Author" means Maxim
+Averyanov, the copyright holder.
+
+1. PERSONAL USE - FREELY PERMITTED
+
+ You may do anything you like with the Software for your own personal,
+ private, educational or research purposes. Run it, modify it, take it apart,
+ build on it, use its output however you wish. No permission is needed and no
+ payment is due.
+
+ Personal use means use by you, for yourself. It stops being personal use the
+ moment the Software, or anything built from it, is put in front of other
+ people, whether or not money changes hands.
+
+2. COMMERCIAL USE - BY WRITTEN PERMISSION ONLY
+
+ Commercial use is possible, and welcome, on two conditions:
+
+ a) The Software must be an ancillary component of your product, not the
+ product itself. It may support what you sell; it may not be what you
+ sell, nor the main thing your product does.
+
+ b) You must obtain written permission from the Author in advance, on terms
+ agreed with the Author. Ask - see section 6.
+
+ Using the Software inside a business without permission is not covered by
+ section 1, however small the business or the use.
+
+3. REDISTRIBUTION - NOT PERMITTED WITHOUT PERMISSION
+
+ You may not distribute the Software, in source or compiled form, modified or
+ unmodified, to anyone else. This applies to paid distribution and to free
+ distribution equally: publishing a copy, a fork, a repackaged build, a
+ mirror, an app-store listing or a bundled installer all require written
+ permission from the Author.
+
+ Restyling, rebranding or reskinning the Software and distributing the result
+ - free or paid - requires written permission from the Author, on terms
+ agreed with the Author.
+
+ Linking to the official repository is always permitted and always welcome.
+ Contributing changes back through a pull request is permitted and welcome;
+ see section 5.

+4. NO WARRANTY, NO LIABILITY

+ AUTHOR BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DAMAGES OR OTHER LIABILITY, WHETHER IN AN
+ ACTION OF CONTRACT, TORT OR OTHERWISE, ARISING FROM, OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION
+ WITH THE SOFTWARE OR THE USE OR OTHER DEALINGS IN THE SOFTWARE.
+
+ The Software drives input on devices you connect to it. What you do with it,
+ and whether that is permitted by the rules of any service, game or platform
+ you point it at, is entirely your responsibility.
+
+5. CONTRIBUTIONS
+
+ By submitting a contribution to this repository, you grant the Author a
+ perpetual, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free licence to use, modify and
+ relicense your contribution as part of the Software. You keep the copyright
+ in what you wrote.
+
+6. PERMISSION, AND EXCEPTIONS
+
+ Permission for anything in sections 2 and 3 is granted case by case, in
+ writing, by the Author. Exceptions to any part of this licence are possible
+ and are considered on request - including free licences for cases the Author
+ finds worthwhile.
+
+ Ask by opening an issue titled "Licence request" at
+ https://github.com/MAXAWER/AutoDraw-Sim/issues, describing what you want to
+ do. A licence granted this way is valid only in writing and only for what it
+ describes.
+
+7. THIRD-PARTY COMPONENTS
+
+ The packaged builds include Google's Android platform-tools (adb), which is
+ distributed under its own terms; its NOTICE.txt travels with it. Python and
+ the libraries the Software depends on remain under their own licences. This
+ licence governs the Software itself, and nothing else.
+
+8. VERSIONS
+
+ The Author may publish later versions of this licence. Code you received
+ under this version stays under this version.
+
+Earlier releases of this project, up to and including the commits published
+before this file was changed, were made available under the MIT Licence. That
+grant stands for those versions; it does not extend to anything published
+afterwards.

+## English
+
+### You may, freely
+
+Use AutoDraw and `adbtouch` for yourself: draw with it, automate your own
+phone, read the code, change it, learn from it, build something on top of it
+for your own use. Study it, take it apart, use its output however you want. No
+permission is needed and nothing is owed.
+
+This is genuinely meant. Personal use has no strings.
+
+### You may, with written permission
+
+**Use it commercially**, on two conditions. It has to be an *ancillary* part of
+what you sell — it can support your product, it cannot be your product — and
+you have to ask first and agree terms with the author.
+
+**Distribute it**, in any form: a fork, a mirror, a repackaged build, an app
+store listing, a bundle inside something else. Free distribution needs
+permission too. This is the part people most often assume is fine by default,
+and here it is not.
+
+**Restyle it and sell it.** A new interface over this engine is still this
+engine. Permission, and terms, first.
+
+### You may not
+
+Do any of the above without asking. That is the whole of it.
+
+### Asking
+
+Open an issue titled "Licence request" and say what you want to do. Exceptions
+are considered on their merits, including free licences where the case is a
+good one. A grant counts only when it is in writing and only for what it says.
+
+### Everything else
+
+There is no warranty; see section 4 of the licence. The Software drives input
+on whatever device you connect. Whether that is allowed by the rules of a
+particular game, service or platform is your responsibility, not the author's.
+
+Bundled third-party components — Google's `adb`, Python, the libraries — keep
+their own licences.
+
+---
+
+## По-русски
+
+### Можно свободно
+

Subject: [PATCH 2/7] Trace photographs the way a person would, not the way
Canny does
Canny answers where brightness changes. On a photograph that is every
texture, every shadow and every compression artefact, and it answers in
outlines, so one line comes back as two with a gap between them. The launch
pad photo gave 715 strokes and 11,470 points of porridge that read as noise
at any size.
adbtouch/trace.py replaces it for photographs, in three steps that are all
arithmetic and no dependency:
XDoG decides where the lines are - a difference of Gaussians finds the scale
structure lives at, and a soft threshold makes the decision an artist makes,
this edge earns a line and that shading does not. Zhang-Suen thinning takes
whatever survives down to one pixel of width. Then the skeleton is walked
into polylines that carry straight on through junctions, because a lattice
tower is nothing but crossings and breaking at each one turns a girder into
thirty stubs.
Two details decide whether the result is a drawing or a scribble. The
threshold is a quantile, so the same slider means the same density on a dark
photograph and a bright one. And it is also floored in absolute contrast,
without which a relative threshold always finds its quota - point it at a
clear sky and it will confidently draw the sensor noise. A unit test on a
flat grey image is what caught that.
Same photograph, same settings: 294 strokes and 2,327 points, sky empty,
shuttle legible. Five times cheaper to draw and the first version of this
that looks like a drawing.
Also fixed: simplification reduces a straight stroke to its two endpoints,
and the min_points filter was then throwing away every straight line in the
picture. Length is what matters.
Canny stays available as method="canny"; it still suits flat vector art,
where every region genuinely is an outline.
examples/launchpad.jpg is NASA's Endeavour on pad 39A - a real photograph

+"""Turn a photograph into strokes a hand could have drawn.
+
+Canny is the obvious choice and the wrong one. It answers "where does brightness
+change", which on a photograph means every texture, every shadow edge and every
+compression artefact - and it answers in outlines, so a pen stroke one pixel
+wide comes back as two lines with a gap between them. Traced faithfully that is
+porridge: thousands of tiny fragments that read as noise at any size.
+
+What a person draws is different, and this module builds it in three steps.
+
+**XDoG** decides where the lines are. A difference of Gaussians finds the scale
+at which structure lives and suppresses the rest, and the extended form pushes
+the result to black or white with a soft threshold, which is exactly the
+decision an artist makes: this edge is worth a line, that shading is not. It is
+the standard way to get line art out of a photograph and it is thirty lines of
+arithmetic.
+
+**Thinning** reduces whatever survives to a single pixel of width, so a line is
+a line rather than a filled ribbon.
+
+**Skeleton tracing** then walks those pixels into polylines, breaking at
+junctions. The result is one stroke per line - not one loop around each side of
+it - which is why the retrace hack Canny needs has no equivalent here.
