Could not find documentation describing differences between xmap and mapCube

I can't find any description of what the difference between xmap and mapCube is and when one should be used over the other..

Yes, Gemini is right, the idea is , that we replace mapCube by xmap and we are currently in the switch between mapCube and xmap. So if you start something new I would use xmap.
