App insists on answering to wrong contact

Steps to reproduce the bug

1. Receive SMS
2. Answer SMS

Expected behavior

View stays at current contact, sends answer there.

Actual behavior

View switches to other contact, sends answer there. Happened 3 times. Always to the same contact.

After blocking the contact, view switches to empty view, sends nothing.

Rollback to 1.4.0 fixed it. Reboot did not.

Updating again and unblocking the number (to create logs), it doesn't happen anymore. Maybe a database issue?

Additional information

Device has unlocked bootloader, Magisk rooted stock ROM, animations disabled, Play Services removed, no rabbit and not a coffee pot.

Yeah i know; can't reproduce, no logs, can't to nothing about it. But maybe it helps that you know something like this can happen.

• Does it happen with any contact or some specific contacts?
• Does it happen in existing conversations or only in new ones where you received a message?
• Have you noticed any pattern as to how this "other contact" is being selected?
• Are you sure it was an SMS conversation? This has been reported already for MMS group conversations here: Reply to group message is sent to unrelated recipient #595 (related: Conversation does not match contact after removing focus from app #365)

That is strange. Did you have many messages in the original conversation?

Well, rough timeline:

• 10:00: answers to contact1
• 10:30: contact1 answered back
• 10:35: answering back again, view switches to second-in-contact-history, contact2
  • "Huh? Sorry, app has a bug, please ignore", reboot to be sure
• 10:40: (copy-pasted draft didn't save) Answer again to contact1, same happens again.
• 10:41: try nr. 3, again, switches to contact2
  • block contact2
  • try nr. 4, switches to now-blocked contact2 and thus empty view (is my guess)
  • goes to f-droid.org, downloads prior version, luckily App Manager has the feature of rollback installation
• 10:45: Can now finally answer to contact1
• 12:00: guess i should still report that
  • writes this bug report
• 12:15: right, a logfile would be good
  • updates app
  • Huh, doesn't happen anymore

It didn't happen prior either.

Ah right, yes, it was sms. And many; maybe 20, 2 years back.

My mom is also having this issue, with two different contacts. I'll check and see if the app needs updating.

I also experienced this phenomenon for the first time today (app version 1.6.0, Motorola moto g34 5G, Android 15, stock ROM). Due to the circumstances, the sent SMS is only assigned to the wrong conversation (the wrong contact), but it should have been sent to the correct number, so it is probably “only” a display problem.

It definitely sent to the wrong people for my mom; she was trying to get in touch with her sister, and texts to her instead went to a local friend of ours, and messages to her sister's roommate went to me. Truly the weirdest bug I've seen in an app.
