BUG: Explorer plugin: Unexpected behavior of "Open with..."

Problem Description

After calling up the Open with... system dialog from the plugin menu, the Choose an app on your PC command does not work in that dialog. However, if you open the same dialog from Windows File Explorer, the command works as expected. Please watch the video below.

Important

Flow Launcher runs in Administrator mode (as described here).

To Reproduce

1. Run FlowLauncher with admin rights, type the name of a text file (so that the Explorer plugin is activated).
2. Click →, select Open with... from the menu, and press Enter.
3. In the dialog that opens, click Choose an app on your PC .
4. Expected: An app selection window should open.
5. Instead: Nothing happens. You cannot select an app to open the selected file.

Suggestion

Perhaps, instead of the Windows app selection dialog, it would be better to create your own list of apps, with currently running apps appearing at the top (as Raycast does).

Can you check if this is an issue with your PC or install as I've tested this with Flow on Windows 10 and 11 and both work for me. Did you have a dialog box open somewhere else?

The problem only occurs when I open the app selection dialog from FlowLauncher. If I open the same dialog from other programs, it works fine.

Yes, thank you for pointing that out. I mentioned this in the description (above), but apparently it wasn’t clear enough—my apologies.

I just tried installing FlowLauncher on two virtual machines—Windows 10 and 11—and the problem doesn’t occur there. A little later, I’ll try reinstalling FlowLauncher on my work computer (it’ll take some time to restore my settings), and hopefully the problem will be fixed. I’ll be sure to post the results here.

I found the cause. This happens because I'm running the Flow Launcher in administrator mode (Run with highest privileges). But I can't change this behavior—I need administrator privileges to do my work. Is it possible to modify the plugin so that the application selection dialog works with administrator privileges?
