We should be more explicit about it, for now. I am actively trying to avoid going down the rabbit-hole of parsing / guessing what format files are.

+1 on this. I exported some GeoJSON from Google Refine using the "Templating" feature, and it saved the file with a ".txt" extension. I think that there should be a way to explicitly define the import file type in the file upload dialog for files with ambiguous names, and I agree that we shouldn't have to guess. :)
