Completed implementation checkpoints: 7 of 7

Current checkpoint: Checkpoint 7 — Deployment and submission

Current status: Complete and ready for submission. The user verified successful hosted Twilio and Composio workflows; public APIs requiring no authentication now produce a verified callable-endpoint success instead of clarification, including focused same-service endpoint discovery, late-page request evidence, one bounded target-resolution retry, and homepage false-positive rejection; 118 tests and the complete quality gate pass.

The complete product definition, architecture, acceptance criteria, and Checkpoints 0–7 live in scope.md. This file only records actual build progress and verification evidence as work is completed.

Progress rules

  • Progress increases only when working, verified implementation is completed.
  • A checkpoint is complete only after its exit criteria in scope.md pass and its commit is pushed to GitHub.
  • Every completed checkpoint records its commit, verification commands, and important implementation notes here.
  • Useful interim work may be committed and pushed, but partial work does not increase the completed-checkpoint count.
  • Completing Checkpoint 7 means the assignment is fully built, tested, deployed, documented, and ready to submit.

Baseline — 2026-08-08

  • No application skeleton, runtime code, tests, browser automation, or deployment exists yet.

Completed checkpoints

Checkpoint 1 — Runnable application and test foundation

Status: complete

Implementation commit: 398418d

Delivered:

  • Next.js 16 and TypeScript application with a reviewer-facing input form.
  • Public POST /api/runs boundary that accepts arbitrary app names or requirements and creates a typed run in resolving state.
  • Blank and malformed input handling.
  • Typed run states, progress events, human-intervention requests, credential results, and failure results.
  • Environment schema, npm scripts, ESLint, Vitest, production build, and GitHub Actions CI.
  • Local setup and verification documentation.

TDD evidence: the first run-creation test failed because the route did not exist, then passed after the minimal implementation. Blank-input and malformed-body tests were each observed failing before their behavior was implemented.

Verification evidence:

Checkpoint 2 — Generic target resolution, research, and planning

Status: complete

Implementation commit: 45d5a14

Delivered:

  • Generic direct-name, requirements-based discovery, and ambiguous-input resolution contracts.
  • Browserbase Search and Fetch adapters using official API endpoints, HTTPS source matching, no redirects, and bounded document content.
  • Gemini structured-output planner with runtime Zod validation and explicit untrusted-data prompts.
  • Evidence-backed credential paths for public credentials, signup, observed blockers, and insufficient official evidence.
  • Mandatory target confirmation before external action on an app selected from requirements.
  • In-memory run storage and a target-confirmation API/UI flow.
  • Redacted research-provider failure responses; server-only provider configuration.
  • No app allowlist, named-app routing, fixed recommendation table, or per-app credential logic.

TDD evidence: direct planning, discovery confirmation, unverified-source rejection, ambiguity clarification, Search/Fetch mapping, prompt-injection boundaries, contradictory blocked results, API planning, redacted failure, and target confirmation were each introduced through observed red→green cycles.

Checkpoint 3 — Generic browser execution and lifecycle safety

Status: complete

Implementation commits: 75576d8, 02689d5

Delivered:

  • Generic Stagehand/Browserbase session adapter with semantic DOM-mode execution and no named-app routing.
  • Dynamic exact-host domain policy derived only from secure, credential-free official plan URLs.
  • One-active-run locking, optional explicit session-start caps, rapid-start throttling, a 12-minute timeout, and explicit cancellation. The deployed runtime relies on Browserbase for the real account allowance instead of imposing a non-replenishing process-lifetime cap.
  • Hard payment/card stop, CAPTCHA auto-solving disabled, recording/logging disabled, and force-close cleanup on terminal and partial-initialization paths.
  • Server execution and cancellation endpoints plus a quota-conscious one-session connectivity command.
  • Stagehand's transitive high-severity undici advisory is patched through an override. The remaining audit findings are 17 low-severity AI SDK advisories for which Stagehand 3.7.1 has no compatible patched 3.x dependency release.

TDD evidence: dynamic navigation/cleanup, payment stop, one-run locking, quota rejection, throttling, timeout, cancellation, cleanup failure, Stagehand configuration/mapping, partial initialization cleanup, execution routing, confirmation enforcement, and cancellation routing were each introduced through observed red→green cycles.

Verification evidence:

The current Browserbase API key resolves its project automatically; no separate project ID is required or accepted by GoFetch configuration.

Checkpoint 4 — Same-session human intervention

Status: complete

Implementation commits: 2060bbb, db2192e

Delivered:

  • Browserbase Live View metadata is returned only for an active paused session and embedded as a read/write iframe.
  • Structured interventions cover private identity values, OTPs, magic links, CAPTCHAs, and general browser takeover.
  • Explicit handback resumes the exact Browserbase session without creating another session.
  • Private inline values are passed as ephemeral Stagehand variables, never interpolated into prompts, stored in run snapshots, or echoed in responses.
  • Human interaction is disabled immediately when agent control resumes; duplicate or stale handbacks are rejected.
  • Cancellation works while the agent is running or paused for a human, and terminal transitions remove Live View metadata.

TDD evidence: same-session pause/resume, transient Live View metadata, private-value non-echo, stale handback rejection, cancellation while paused, private Stagehand variables, and mutually exclusive control are covered through public seams.

Automated verification evidence:

  • npm test — passed; 37 tests across 10 files.
  • npm run typecheck — passed.

Checkpoint 5 — Credential discovery, extraction, and validation

Status: complete

Implementation commit: e5147a0

Delivered:

  • Generic browser-agent discovery across official developer, API, integration, token, and security settings without app-specific routes.
  • Structured credential evidence for API keys, personal access tokens, bearer tokens, OAuth clients, and public demo keys.
  • Official-domain and planned-type validation before any extracted credential becomes a success result.
  • Distinct validated_success and obtained_unverified results; validation requires an actually performed harmless official check.
  • No-browser public credential results only when the exact value appears verbatim in fetched official documentation.
  • Structured blocker, clarification, technical-failure, cancellation, and timeout results.
  • Secret masking/redaction helpers, no secret interpolation into prompts, transient in-memory handling, and an explicit final credential field with copy control.
  • Session cleanup after credential success and every tested terminal browser path.

TDD evidence: validated credential extraction, unverified results, hostile source rejection, masking/redaction, public demo credentials, terminal route storage, cancellation results, and Stagehand credential mapping were introduced through public-seam tests.

Verification evidence:

Checkpoint 6 — Complete reviewer experience

Status: complete

Delivered:

  • Mandatory pre-run authorization and Browserbase-retention disclosure.
  • Reviewer-readable progress milestones, terminal credential/failure panels, and corrected UI text.
  • Cancel control during agent work, Live View takeover, and handback, with stale async responses prevented from overwriting cancellation.
  • Public-seam journey coverage for direct input, discovery confirmation, no-browser public credentials, no-human browser success, HITL same-session success, blockers, cancellation, timeout, and redacted infrastructure failure.
  • Browserbase Model Gateway planning fallback requiring only the Browserbase key, with an optional direct-Gemini override.
  • Exact searched-source allowlisting for model-returned URLs and one short, non-recorded planning session with force-close cleanup.
  • Documented google/gemini-2.5-flash default and a quota-conscious Model Gateway connectivity command.

Final checkpoint

Checkpoint 7 — Deployment and submission

Status: complete

Implementation and deployment commits: c95cf18, 7d4ce6e, af1327a, 6b599a3, 60e8294, be0504a, 0603bd0, f7ca99a, fee3f12

Delivered:

  • Render single-process Node deployment blueprint with free-instance, health-check, Node-version, automatic-deploy, and secret-prompt configuration.
  • Architecture notes covering request flow, module seams, trust boundaries, lifecycle limits, hosting rationale, and production-expansion tradeoffs.
  • README deployment path and production environment guidance.
  • Public Render service at https://gofetch-zw8v.onrender.com, with no application login wall and automatic deployment from main.
  • Production Browserbase secret and supported Model Gateway model configured server-side.
  • Generic provider-output normalization that accepts descriptive model labels only after exact official-document credential verification; no named-app routing was added.
  • Final acceptance audit in submission.md.

Hosted acceptance evidence:

  • Direct GitHub input selected GitHub and returned a signup-required plan with three exact official sources.
  • Requirements input a project-management app with a free API dynamically selected Project Manager, explained the choice, and honestly returned insufficient evidence when the retrieved official page did not expose a credential.
  • Direct NASA Open APIs input selected NASA APIs and returned the official DEMO_KEY as obtained_unverified, with copy control, three official sources, and the documented hourly/daily limits.
  • The user verified successful current-build hosted workflows for both Twilio and Composio.
  • The Composio workflow included genuine human login, unchanged-session handback, agent-side API-key creation, and credential return.
  • Render reported commit fee3f12 live before the final hosted run.

Final verification evidence:

  • npm test — passed; 104 tests across 14 files on the final hardened build.

Post-completion maintenance

Provider signup-path normalization

Status: complete

Implementation commit: 3c97c86

Reported symptom: direct input twilio api returned the generic research_failed UI message.

Root cause: Browserbase completed the official-source research but sometimes used a documentation path, section name, or descriptive phrase in the loose classification field instead of the required workflow-category enum. The strict internal parser correctly rejected that output, but the rejection surfaced as an avoidable technical failure.

Delivered:

  • Renamed and described the provider-facing field as workflowCategory so its meaning is unambiguous.
  • Added generic normalization for descriptive signup classifications and token terminology without app-name routing.
  • Uses a retrieved official HTTPS document as the safe browser starting point when a signup credential path is evidenced but a separate signup URL is absent.
  • Preserved verbatim official-document verification for public credentials and the strict internal result schema.
  • Removed all temporary diagnostics after confirming the cause.

Verification evidence:

  • The original local twilio api provider loop changed from HTTP 502 to HTTP 201 with state: planning, path: signup_required, credentialTypes: api_key, and three official sources.
  • Hosted acceptance after Render marked 3c97c86 live selected Twilio, returned signup_required, displayed three exact twilio.com sources, and exposed Start browser work.
  • Two new regression tests cover descriptive signup output and verified-official-source fallback.
  • Full suite passed with 62 tests across 13 files, plus typecheck, lint, production build, high-severity audit gate, secret scan, and git diff --check.

Stagehand v3 browser-runtime compatibility

Status: superseded by Model Gateway regression work below

Implementation commit: 7fa8a84

Observed symptom: after the corrected Twilio plan, starting browser work created and closed a Browserbase session in under two seconds and returned technical_failure.

Root cause: the Stagehand adapter called a context.setDomainPolicy method that is not part of the installed Stagehand v3 context API. A locally declared interface and fake adapter had masked the mismatch.

Delivered:

  • Removed the nonexistent provider context call and aligned the adapter with the current Stagehand v3 context surface.
  • Enabled the documented experimental mode required by abort signals, callbacks, and tool exclusion.
  • Enforced verified HTTPS hostnames within GoFetch before and after direct navigation and after every agent step.
  • Disabled the agent's autonomous goto, navback, and search tools while preserving semantic interaction on the verified page.
  • Added a regression test using the real Stagehand v3 context shape and a negative unverified-domain navigation assertion.

Verification evidence:

  • Live local Twilio execution returned blocked on www.twilio.com rather than technical_failure.
  • Hosted Twilio API acceptance after deployment returned planning/signup_required, then a real Browserbase run returned blocked on www.twilio.com rather than technical_failure.
  • Full suite passed with 63 tests across 13 files, plus typecheck, lint, production build, high-severity audit gate, secret scan, and git diff --check.

Acceptance correction: the two blocked results above were accepted too weakly. Their reason was a missing GOOGLE_GENERATIVE_AI_API_KEY, which is an infrastructure failure, not a legitimate target blocker. Checkpoint 7 was therefore reopened instead of treating the assignment as complete.

Browserbase Model Gateway execution repair

Status: implementation complete; hosted acceptance pending

Implementation commit: c70a2c3

Observed symptom: starting browser work produced a blocked result whose reason said the Google Generative AI API key was missing.

Root cause: Stagehand 3.7.1 uses its local provider client when experimental: true; that bypassed Browserbase Model Gateway and attempted to authenticate directly with Google. Passing the configured model again would not fix the routing mode.

Delivered:

  • Disabled experimental/local-provider execution so all model-backed browser decisions continue through Browserbase Model Gateway with the existing server-side Browserbase key.
  • Replaced the experimental autonomous-agent call with a bounded generic extract → one safe act → domain check loop.
  • Preserved structured credential, human-intervention, payment, blocker, and completion outcomes without named-app logic.
  • Preserved private handback values as Stagehand variables rather than prompt text.
  • Added regression coverage for Model Gateway mode, generic action progression, private-value redaction, credential mapping, and cross-domain action termination.

Verification evidence:

  • The exact adapter regression was observed red with experimental: true, then green after the routing repair.
  • npm test — passed; 65 tests across 13 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, and git diff --check — passed.
  • Hosted multi-input and real signup pause/resume acceptance remain required before Checkpoint 7 returns to complete.

Hosted input-matrix and quota hardening

Status: implementation complete; final live signup acceptance blocked by provider quota

Delivered:

  • Treats a page that is still rendering as a retryable browser step rather than a target blocker.
  • Accepts signup, registration, and start-free URLs only when they appear verbatim in fetched official evidence.
  • Generically discovers documented account-creation links from official HTML; no app-specific selectors or routes.
  • Trusts only the immediate secure redirect reached from a verified signup URL, then resumes exact-host enforcement after every action.
  • Adds a 45-second timeout to each structured browser extraction so one provider call cannot consume the entire 12-minute session.
  • Retries the full planning pipeline once with fresh dependencies after a transient provider failure.
  • Repairs check:handoff for the installed Stagehand v3 API while retaining exact-domain checks.

Hosted matrix evidence:

  • NASA Open APIs selected NASA APIs from three official sources and returned the documented public demo credential as obtained_unverified.
  • an API for something useful returned one focused clarification question with no selected app.
  • a project-management app with a free API dynamically selected ProjectManager.com and returned a precise insufficient-evidence reason from the retrieved official source.
  • Twilio API preserved the direct target and produced a signup-required plan from three official sources. Earlier browser attempts exposed and drove the generic fixes above; they do not count as completed signup acceptance.
  • Browserbase project usage reported 77 browser minutes after the live diagnosis campaign. This exceeds the documented 60-minute free allowance, and subsequent unrelated Resend API planning exhausted its bounded retry and returned HTTP 502.

Verification evidence:

  • npm test — passed; 71 tests across 14 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, and git diff --check — passed.
  • npm audit --audit-level=high — passed; 17 documented low-severity transitive AI SDK advisories remain.
  • The final deployed third-party signup pause/resume criterion stays unchecked until the Browserbase quota resets or the project is upgraded. A technical/quota failure is not counted as a target blocker or success.

Fresh Browserbase-account verification

  • A newly created Browserbase account was configured in the deployed Render service after its API key successfully returned the newly created Production project.
  • The new project's reported usage was 0 browser minutes and 0 proxy bytes. A direct new-key remote session opened example.com successfully, proving browser allocation works on the project.
  • The first 402 responses were traced to Render's old worker, which received the request while the intended secret value was not yet saved and the corrected deployment was still starting. A private post-deploy comparison confirmed the Render secret exactly matches the new supplied key.
  • After the corrected worker became live, deployed NASA Open APIs planning completed successfully and reached the target-confirmation gate. This closes the infrastructure/quota diagnosis; it does not yet satisfy the final human-pause/resume criterion.
  • The generic, provider-safe browser_quota_unavailable response (HTTP 503) remains covered by a regression test for any genuine HTTP 402 browser-minute failure.

Deployed Composio credential-path correction

  • Reproduced the user-observed direct-input failure: a classifier returned insufficient_evidence even though the official document established account-scoped API keys. The deterministic regression test failed before the fix.
  • Generic normalization now converts that specific evidence pattern into signup_required, beginning at the verified official document rather than guessing a console URL. It preserves explicit target-side blockers and never hardcodes an app name or domain.
  • Deployed composio ai now selects Composio, produces signup_required, starts one Browserbase session, and reaches awaiting_human with an embedded live handoff requesting only signup identity fields. This is the required real shared-session pause.
  • The unchanged-session handback and agent-side API-key retrieval remain live pending the human completing the Composio sign-in/signup step in the embedded browser.

Resumed-browser recovery and diagnostics

Status: implementation complete; live credential retrieval remains pending

Reported symptom: after a successful human login and handback, the browser run ended with the generic technical_failure message.

Delivered:

  • Retries one transient execute failure in the existing Browserbase session after handback; it does not create a replacement session or ask the human to repeat login. An inline OTP/value remains ephemeral and is preserved for that retry.
  • Preserves the human/agent control boundary while retrying and still closes the session on a genuine terminal failure.
  • Surfaces a short, redacted browser diagnostic only after the retry fails, so the next real provider issue is actionable without exposing credentials.
  • Adds regression tests for both a successful resumed-session retry and a double failure with Browserbase-like secret redaction.

Verification evidence:

  • npm test — passed; 83 tests across 14 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, and git diff --check — passed.
  • A production build and deployed handback retest remain required before this can count as the final credential-retrieval acceptance.

Verified sibling-domain handback continuation

Status: implementation complete; deployed retest pending

Reported symptom: after successful login, the browser returned from the identity flow to an official dashboard subdomain and stopped at the exact-host domain guard.

Delivered:

  • Replaced exact-host-only continuation with a registrable-domain policy derived from verified official HTTPS sources, using the public suffix list (tldts) rather than a fragile last-two-label heuristic.
  • This permits the normal docs → dashboard or account → console transition for the same verified service, while still rejecting different registrable domains, credentials in URLs, and insecure navigation.
  • External identity-provider pages remain human handoffs; the policy does not let the agent enter the user's login details.

Verification evidence:

  • New regression covers a verified sibling dashboard and a separate-domain action escape.
  • npm test — passed; 84 tests across 14 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, and git diff --check — passed.

External-identity redirect handoff correction

Status: implementation complete; deployed retest pending

Reported symptom: the starting Composio route immediately redirected to Google account creation, but that redirect was accidentally promoted to a trusted browser domain before the human-handoff check ran.

Delivered:

  • An initial redirect to a recognized external identity provider remains untrusted and is immediately exposed as a same-session human handoff.
  • Removed the unsafe blanket trust of immediate redirects; a normal redirect must now be on a verified official service domain, and an unrelated redirect is rejected.
  • The browser operator is never invoked on the Google identity page before the user takes over.

Verification evidence:

  • Regression test drives composio.dev → accounts.google.com through navigate() then verifies awaiting_human without a model extraction.
  • Regression test rejects an immediate evil.attacker.test redirect.
  • npm test — passed; 84 tests across 14 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, and git diff --check — passed.

Authenticated-dashboard structured recovery

Status: implementation complete; deployed retest pending

Reported symptom: after successful login and unchanged-session handback, two schema-invalid dashboard observations immediately ended the run with The browser could not produce a safe structured next step.

Root cause: the browser loop treated a second malformed structured observation as terminal even when Stagehand could still perform safe semantic actions on the authenticated page.

Delivered:

  • After two malformed observations, performs one bounded mechanical recovery step toward API keys, credentials, access tokens, developer settings, or project settings on the verified service, then re-inspects the page.
  • The recovery may create or label a key only with non-sensitive values; identity, OTP, CAPTCHA, payment, card, and credential entry remain forbidden.
  • Allows at most two recovery actions and then fails closed with a precise authenticated-page reason, preventing an unbounded loop.
  • Preserves the existing external-identity handoff and verified-domain checks after every recovery action.

Verification evidence:

  • The exact post-login two-malformed-observation regression was observed failing before the fix and now reaches credential_obtained after recovery.
  • A companion test verifies the two-recovery ceiling and terminal reason.
  • npm test — passed; 86 tests across 14 files.
  • npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run build, git diff --check, and debug-marker cleanup — passed.

Security-verification human handoff

Status: implementation complete; deployed retest pending

Reported symptom: after login, an automated Cloudflare bot check was returned as a terminal target blocker instead of pausing the live session for the account owner.

Root cause: only identity/login blocker wording was normalized into a human handoff; security-verification and CAPTCHA wording passed through as blocked.

Delivered:

  • Converts observed Cloudflare, Turnstile, CAPTCHA, human-verification, bot-check, and security-challenge blockers into a same-session captcha intervention.
  • The agent never solves or bypasses the challenge. The human completes it in Live View, hands control back, and the browser resumes from that exact session.
  • Does not invoke a mechanical agent action on the challenge page.

Verification evidence:

  • The exact reported Cloudflare sentence was observed returning blocked before the fix and now returns human_required with intervention.kind: captcha.
  • npm test — passed; 87 tests across 14 files.
